MBJ Teaches at UMN
September 8, 2021 – As in years past, MBJ engineers are returning to the University of Minnesota this year to teach classes in structural engineering for both the Architecture and Construction Management Departments. USS AZ Gardens ENR Winner
August 18, 2021 – MBJ is honored to have been the structural engineer of record on the USS Arizona Memorial Gardens, which has won a Best Projects award from Engineering News Record Southwest in the Landscape/Urban Development category. The 5-acre memorial, dedicated to the crew of the USS Arizona, takes its form and dimensions from the original ship and is delineated by lit columns representing each of the crew members. At the center of the gardens is a building that houses a 4800 pound relic of the ship, surrounded by a plaza and reflecting pool.

Jost Interviewed on ACE Mentorship
August 12, 2021 – MBJ ACE champion Saura Jost recently participated in a podcast panel discussion about ACE and its benefits to both employers and students. A Twin Cities ACE board member and longtime ACE mentor, Saura talked about how the Twin Cities program has expanded to draw more mentors and include more students as well as how businesses can get involved. Other guest speakers were Monica Worheide, National Director of Affiliates, and Khalil Berryhill, Regional director and former mentor and student.
ACE is a free mentorship program that introduces high school students to the fields of architecture, construction, and engineering. The program also awards $2.5 million in annual scholarships to students pursuing industry related careers.

Kuehn Elected MNSEA YMG Chair
May 12, 2021 – At MBJ we are passionate about helping structural engineering students and new engineers grow in their chosen profession, so we are very pleased to announce that MBJ’s Morgan Kuehn, P.E., was recently elected as Chair of the Minnesota Structural Engineers Association (MNSEA) Younger Member Group (YMG). Prior to becoming Chair, Morgan was active as a MNSEA member and served as YMG Student Liaison. In 2020, she participated as part of a presentation panel in a live webinar for “budding engineers” on how to effectively begin their structural engineering career, which can be viewed here: Structural Engineering: First Year of Your Career. Borchers Speaks at AIA Materials Matter
April 14, 2021 – Eric Borchers, PE, will be presenting in the upcoming AIA MN Materials Matter – Session 3: Tools of the Trade: Assessment + Implementation program on April 21, 2021. As part of the morning session on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), with presenters Kate Simonen (CLF), Meghan Lewis (CLF), and Justin Schwarzhoff (LMN), Eric will present case studies of LCA used in practice to influence teams towards lower embodied carbon design choices.

Curran Is BD+C 40 Under 40
January 28, 2021 – We congratulate MBJ principal Murphy Curran, who was recently honored as one of BD+C’s 40 Under 40 Class of 2020. Murphy joined MBJ in 2011 and in 2018 became the firm’s youngest Principal. Since becoming MBJ’s Business Development Director, Murphy has tripled the firm’s annual revenue. He has worked on more than 30 award-winning projects, including Northrop Auditorium at the University of Minnesota, where he has also served as adjunct teaching faculty and structural studio advisor.
