Bradley and Huber New Associates
November 2, 2016 – We are pleased to announce our new firm Associates, Jessica Bradley, PE, and Matt Huber, PE. In their new role, Jessica and Matt work as leaders, managers, and ambassadors of MBJ’s mission, both within our practice and in the communities we serve.
Jessica leads our BIM practice, managing our modeling staff and Revit graphic standards development for the firm. Jessica is a licensed professional engineer who, in a project manager and lead engineer role, has led large projects in a wide variety of structural systems including post-tensioned concrete, structural steel, and wood-framed construction. Jessica participates on the MCTC Architectural Technology program advisory committee, and has been an ACE mentor.
Matt leads our steel connections practice area, managing a team of 30 employees to satisfy technical and process-based outcomes for steel fabricator clients across the country. As a licensed professional engineer Matt guides the implementation of our steel connection quality control standards, and mentors his team members daily. In a design role, Matt participates in some degree on all of our steel connection design projects from ensuring proper project kickoff and management to development of some of our most complex connection solutions.
H.Q. Apartments on the Horizon
October 20, 2016 – Our colleagues at Kraus-Anderson (KA) are helping to shape downtown Minneapolis with their new 5-story office building and full block development that also includes a 17-story apartment tower, a 160-room hotel, a microbrewery, and underground parking. We are very pleased to be working with KA as their structural engineers on this project. Read more here.
MN Poultry Lab Opens
October 7, 2016 – On Thursday of this week, the Minnesota Poultry Testing Laboratory was officially opened in Willmar, MN. As structural engineer of record, we are excited to have participated in a project that will help protect Minnesota’s food supply and farm economy. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, “The unprecedented 2015 bird flu epidemic in Minnesota that claimed 5 million turkeys and 4 million egg-laying chickens was a wake-up call to improve biosecurity measures and to upgrade the state’s capacity to respond to large-scale poultry disease.” Read the rest of the article here.
McCord is ACI National Award Winner
September 16, 2016 – As structural engineer for McCord Hall at ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business, we are pleased to announce that the project has won this year’s American Concrete Institute Award for Excellence in Concrete Construction. ACI describes the award as “a platform to recognize concrete projects at the forefront of innovation and technology, and showcases these projects to inspire excellence in concrete design and construction around the world.”
New Hotel Towers Rise on the Prairie
July 25, 2016 – Ground was broken for two new hotel towers at Treasure Island Resort and Casino last week. Meyer Borgman Johnson is proud to be structural engineer on the $86 million project, which adds up to 500 new hotel rooms for guests of the Prairie Island Indian Community’s Caribbean-themed casino. Testing Historic Structures
July 20, 2016 – Elizabeth Manning, a member of MBJ’s preservation engineering team, has written a scholarly article, appearing in the September issue of the Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation. The article, entitled “Tube-Jack Testing for Irregular Masonry Walls: Regular Masonry Wall Testing,” is currently available to read online. Elizabeth is a PhD candidate in the historic preservation engineering program at the University of Minho in Portugal. See paper abstract, below.
ABSTRACT: This paper presents the continued development of a novel non-destructive testing method termed tube-jack testing. The goal of the tube-jack system is to provide an enhanced and less destructive method than traditional flat-jack testing for determination of mechanical characteristics and local stress states in irregular masonry walls. Single tube-jack tests were performed, using previously developed rubber tube-jacks, in regular masonry walls of granite and cement-lime mortar. A traditional flat-jack test was also performed in the same masonry wall. Conclusions suggest that tube-jacks are successful in applying pressure to the masonry at low stress states.
Dan Murphy Leads ACEC MN
June 6, 2016 – Having served on the board of ACEC Minnesota as an officer in recent years, CEO and Principal Dan Murphy transitioned into the role of President in May. An active member of professional engineering organizations both locally and nationally, Dan also recently sat on the jury for the 2016 SEA-MW Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards and was Master of Ceremonies for the gala celebration announcing the winners in Washington D.C.
Maurices Moves
April 27, 2016 – Retailer Maurices is consolidating its workforce into a new headquarters in downtown Duluth, where the brand began nearly seventy years ago. The project, for which Meyer Borgman Johnson provided structural engineering services, is the largest downtown development in Duluth’s history. Read about it here.
The Rose – Sustainable Living
April 25, 2016 – The Rose, a sustainable, affordable housing project in Minneapolis, MN, designed by MSR Design with structural engineering by Meyer Borgman Johnson is showcased in a new article in the May/June 2016 issue of ArchitectureMN magazine, available on newsstands now. Aspiring to meet Living Building Challenge criteria (the most rigorous and broad of all current sustainability frameworks), the project surpasses LEED standards in many areas, such as water usage, energy, air quality, and local sourcing.
