Urban Outfitters has been in the news recently because of its new corporate offices, located in the historic Navy Yard of south Philadelphia. MBJ provided structural engineering services for the five circa 1900 buildings that were rehabilitated to provide over 250,000 square feet of office, restaurant, and event space for the retailer.
The buildings range from one to three stories, some with mezzanines. Care was taken to preserve much of the original architecture and materials characteristic of the era, such as heavy timber, cast- and wrought-iron, carbon steel, concrete, and unreinforced multi-wythe brick. The project was completed in only 20 months. Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle was the architect.
